"Better Bottles" - Plastic Carboys
6 gallon
2000 ml Flask for doing yeast starters. Can be placed directly on the stove for the boil and transferred to a cold water bath for chilling prior to pitching the yeast.
Basic Beer Equipment Kits
The basic equipment kit has (2) 6.5 gallon plastic buckets. Upgrades replace the second bucket with a 6 gallon plastic, 5 gallon glass, or 6 gallon glass carboy.
The next group of equipment kits include a 7.8 gallon plastic bucket and one of three carboys; 6 gallon plastic Better Bottle, 5 gallon glass, or 6 gallon glass.
All equipment kits come with a hydrometer, beer bottle brush, racking/bottling kit, capper, adhesive thermometer, three piece air lock, cleanser, and an instruction book.
There are a few additional things needed, mainly bottles and caps. A floating thermometer is a good addition if you plan to steep specialty grains. The kits include cleanser, but not sanitizer. A good sanitizer is recommended.
A good option for a boiling kettle is a Turkey Fryer. Larger pots are better than smaller ones. I would recommend a minimum of a 7 gallon pot for boiling a 5 gallon batch. Approximately 1 gallon will evaporate during the boil and you need some additional space for the foam that forms during the boil.
